What is Yin Yoga and Why You Need It In Your Life

Have you ever wondered, why our so long awaited and short summer, instead of leaving us feel invigorated and glowing, makes us fatigued and lazy instead?
We had millions of plans of getting out and about yet sometimes, as we re approaching the shortest night of the year, we feel overwhelmed and exhausted. If you can relate to this, you are not the only one. One of the reasons why it happens is that a good night of sleep is getting harder hard to come by, and I know many of you ladies are not great sleepers in the first place. In summers, due to longer daytime, our bodies produce less melatonin, the ‘sleepy hormone’. Another reason we feel sluggish in summer might be dehydration and salt loss, resulting in low levels of sodium. And, last (for the sake of this blog post) but not least, we simply have more hours in the day now, and while it was perfectly acceptable to stay in watching your favourite telly all evening in February, in summer we are trying to get out and about, make social plans, get those daily steps in and don’t even get me started on gardening. All of which is wonderful but there is one thing we might be overlooking here: the need for deep rest.

Let’s slow down together with fairy lights, incenses, bolsters and blankets in the cosy Calm on Canning Street studio. If you haven’t tried my Yin yoga class yet, I’m inviting you to give it a try this month.
Here are some benefits of Yin yoga:
  1. Reduces stress and anxiety
  2. Helps restore your range of motion
  3. Helps to promote mindfulness
  4. Improves joint mobility
  5. Improves flexibility
  6. Elongates and stretches tight muscles
  7. Can promote feelings of deep calm
Yin is the slow, stable and feminine counterpart to masculine styles of yoga such as ashtanga and vinyasa. It’s a great way to balance your regular exercise routine out. We’ll hold each posture for 2-4 minutes and target your deep tissues, fascia, joints and even bones.
Besides, your health and wellbeing is a balancing act. If you look at the yin/yang symbol you will see that the white and black forms are in perfect balance. Many of us live very active (yang) lifestyles and leave little or no time to foster the quiet, introspective side. Over time this can be physically, mentally, and emotionally draining. Through the yin practice we can restore equilibrium and feel whole. So, if the idea of holding a yin pose for 2-3 minutes is making you squirm, that is exactly why you should give it a try.
Next Yin class:
